The Benefits of Breathing Slowly
Your air supply will last much longer if you maintain a slower breathing rate than you do on land. This may require a conscious effort during your first dives, but as you gain comfort and experience, you'll automatically adjust your breathing rate when you begin a dive.

Breathing slowly also helps you to focus on breathing more deeply, and results in increased mental comfort and efficient oxygen exchange between your lungs and blood cells.

During periods of increased activity, it may be impossible to maintain a slow, deep breathing cycle. If this occurs, you should immediately stop, rest, and focus on regaining control of your breathing rate.
